Lingual: Toast, pop-up, or new screen?
This is one of my favorite designs because I enjoyed the theme and staying on brand. Lingual is a fictional app for language learning. Think Duolingo. The task was to create microcopy based on the scenarios, choose the best method of delivery and stay on brand. The brand voice guidelines provided were:
Magical, playful, encouraging and positive.
The messages I needed to deliver include:
A user earned a badge for completing 500 words.
All progress would be lost if they exit mid-lesson.
The user unfollowed a learner.
A lesson couldn’t load because of internet connection
User hit their daily word bank goal.
I chose to go with a wizard theme and my design is below :).
Badge screen: 500 words in any language is a big deal! A screen should pop up and there would be a whole animation with magical music behind it. Think Mario Kart when you come in first place. I enjoy alliteration and thought using it would be fun to congratulate the user.
Progress: I chose a standard pop-up to deliver the message because it’s simple and familiar to the user. People are more likely to click the left button than the right so I added friction by making it the cancel button.
Unfollowed: I chose a toast pop-up that notifies the user that they “banished” or unfollowed a fellow learner while giving them the option to undo it in case it was a mistake. I picked Alex Russo because she was a well-known wizard but maybe I should have chosen Harry Potter 🤓.
Connectivity issues: A screen was the better choice because even though it can be frustrating to be interrupted when you’re in the middle of something, making the error screen actionable by adding the ‘settings’ CTA allows users to fix it and return to learning.
Goal: This screen would show up after the user has completed the lesson that helped them achieve their daily word goal. The CTAs give users an option to claim and continue or to redeem their earnings in the shop.
